The wineyards around Pouilly sur Loire produce white wines which are lesser-known than the nearby Sancerre and because of the introduction in some wine of the Chasselas grape somewhat sweeter and fruitier. The wines known as Pouilly fume also come from the surrounding vineyards.
The town is situated in the east of the Loire Valley area where you would expect to find the white wines based on the Sauvignon Blanc grape so the mix gives the wine quite a unique taste.
The town itself sits on the side of a hill and slopes down to the Loire where in the summer months the Fete du Vin for Pouilly is held. The town is full of old houses, shops and restaurants, narrow streets and antique shops and itself is worth a visit.
